A Photo is Worth … Wednesday!

Senior sisters Jazzy and Jasmine. Photo via Old Dog Haven on Facebook.

About a month ago, Old Dog Haven—an incredible nonprofit organization in western Washington that rescues senior dogs who are losing their homes or are already in shelters—put out an urgent call for a “final refuge” foster family for a 14-year-old Shepherd, with the offer of paying all expenses for her care. Jasmine had lived outside for years and then her family actually moved away and left the deaf and arthritic senior on the property, only returning occasionally. A neighbor gave her food and water.

A man with a 16-year old Lab stepped up and agreed to bring Jasmine into his family. Read the story and see a very touching photo of Jasmine and her new foster dad’s first meeting, here.

This past Sunday, ODH provided the awesome photo above and this update on Facebook:

“Remember Jasmine who was abandoned and tied to a doghouse on Whidbey? Her foster dad is adopting her and she is doing great with her new friend Jazzy. Happy endings like this make it worth all the effort from everyone! That is Jasmine on the right : )”

When my grandmother’s sister would fly from Montana to California to visit her, they loved to sit around the house, drinking tea and chatting it up. I totally get that feeling from these two sweet senior sisters! Cheers, ladies!

  1. Such sweet seniors. It is great when people realize that the senior dogs still have so much to give.

  2. That is so sweet! Our older sister Chopper lived to be almost 14, and our Mama loved her so much. She can’t imagine ever just leaving Chopper behind somewhere… or, even worse, letting Chopper spend her final days in a shelter or something! We are glad this beautiful doggie has found a family to retire with. :)

Chopper is one of the best names EVER! I bet she was a really fun older sister! Thanks for stopping by Trixie, Lily and Sammy-Joe!

I have a soft spot for labradors having owned 3 prior to my Cavaliers. The last lived till 15. Senior dogs speak volumes through their eyes.

    • DDY says:

Fifteen?! What a grand age! You are SO right about those eyes, Miss Kodee! Thanks for your comment!

Love those white muzzles on senior pups. My Xena’s was so cute as she aged. Miss here terribly :( Give Jasmine and Jazzy a hug from us; we need our senior loving! From Carrie, Tanner & Oliver

Oh, I loved seeing Xena on the Magical Mystery Mutt Tour, Carrie! She looked like SUCH a sweet girl and I really enjoyed your tribute to her! Thanks for stopping by today!

  5. how could jasmine’s family have abandoned her like that? it’s ridiculous that people like that are wandering around. no doubt they now have a new cute little pup to play with.

thank goodness for the happy ending :)

    • DDY says:

Ridiculous indeed, GLP! I remember someone once commented that at times they’re embarrassed to be a human. That always pops into my mind when I hear a story like Jasmine’s. But thanks to an awesome human, she can enjoy the golden years she deserves.

What a great story! It’s heartbreaking to hear stories like this, but fortunately this one had such a happy ending. Thanks for sharing–it made my day!!

  7. Oh, they are lovely… makes me miss my dear old boy Seamus. The senior years are so tender and sweet.

  8. Pup Fan says:

So sweet! :) I’m happy that this wonderful senior dog now has a great home.

  9. Poor Jasmine…how could anyone leave her there all alone?! I am so glad to hear her story is ending happily.

I too love the white on their faces…they both look so distinguished. :)

Thanks for highlighting senior dogs. Georgia Little Pea sent me here, and I’m glad she did – I’m a big fan of senior dogs and have fostered and adopted many with similar stories to this. Abandoned or dumped at a shelter after being a faithful companion for years and years. The shelter where I work just received a delightful thirteen year old dog whose owner’s boyfriend just moved in and didn’t want the dog around. Personally, I would have dumped the boyfriend, not the dog!
I currently share my life with two senior collie crosses – Charley will be 14 this year and Sadie is about 11 or 12. I hope they’ll have many more years with me.

      Hello Jean B!
I’m thrilled you stopped by. Charley and Sadie must be joys and I look forward to reading about them on your blog! I just clicked through for a quick visit and squealed with delight at the pictures of Roscoe – after senior dogs, pigs are my absolute favorites so your blog definitely has a new fan here!

I not only would have dumped that boyfriend but I would have moved all his stuff to the shelter and checked him in there to give him a taste of shelter life! No matter how great a shelter operation is, it’s a very stressful experience for dogs, especially seniors. I volunteer at the Oregon Humane Society and thankfully they have very good adoption success for seniors. But I know that is not the case everywhere. Are you familiar with Old Dog Haven in Washington state? They are a wonderful organization that specializes in pulling senior dogs from shelters and find them forever families.

I will definitely be thanking Ms. Georgia Little Pea for sending you my way – isn’t she a peach?! Have a great weekend!
