Cause* It’s Saturday

"Is this hole big enough to plant in? Cause I can dig deeper, no prob!"

Daley was a super gardening helper—he was always the first to volunteer to taste the fruits and vegetables and if you needed a hole to be dug, well, he was your dog! Daley was also an excellent design consultant, offering his opinion (by way of sniffs) on what should go together when I potted flowers and succulents.

In his elderly years, helping me garden was a great “retirement” hobby for Daley, an engaging outdoor activity that wasn’t too strenuous. That said, if there was an opportunity to swipe an apple from the tree, you should have seen the spring in his step as he made for the shade with his juicy treasure!

Our fun times gardening together came to mind thanks to Grey Muzzle Organization’s announcement that its online flower bulb boutique is open for business and the annual “Flower Power for Senior Dogs” campaign is underway!

Grey Muzzle supports homeless senior dogs by funding non-profit shelters, rescues and sanctuaries on a yearly basis. The grants go towards adoptions, medical care, hospice programs and quality-of-life items for senior dogs in need. Here are more details on “Flower Power” (shop here!):

“Through flower bulb purchases, dog lovers and gardening enthusiasts can generate funds to provide new beginnings for abandoned older dogs. Through April 29 “Flower Power for Senior Dogs” features an online boutique of lilies, dahlias, daffodils and dozens of popular spring flower bulbs. These colorful purchases will not only beautify gardens but support a worthwhile mission.

Hosted by Flower Power Fundraising, 50 percent of purchases at the online gardening boutique will be donated to the Grey Muzzle Organization. All generated funds will help senior dogs awaiting adoption at shelters and rescue groups nationwide.

Once-loved older dogs who find themselves at adoption centers, often times due to an owner’s death or economic reasons, are frequently overlooked and face a high risk of euthanasia. Grey Muzzle is dedicated to improving the lives of at-risk senior dogs by providing funding and resources to animal shelters, rescues, and sanctuaries.

The Grey Muzzle Organization is a national 501(c)(3) non-profit organization run entirely by volunteers in 21 states. The “Flower Power for Senior Dogs” online floral boutique is accessible through the Grey Muzzle website (www.greymuzzle.org). At the site visitors can also honor a cherished pet, donate an orthopedic bed for a shelter dog, and shop for fun pet items which all benefit the organization’s mission.”

  1. Another wonderful project for senior dogs. It never ceases to amaze me how many there are where you live! Love your new look sidebar too. And that sunny pic of Daley. Don’t think I’ve seen it before. xox

I did not know about the Grey Muzzle Organization… thank you so much! I’m going to abandon the blog hop to hop over there and check out flower bulbs. I’ve got a couple of senior canines who’d love to help me plant. :-)

      Hi Sue,
Thanks for your comment and it gave me an idea: Wouldn’t it be fun to have people post photos of planting bulbs with their senior dogs? I’m going to suggest it to Grey Muzzle!

I really appreciate you stopping by! Happy planting!

  3. Hi Y’all,
Thanks for telling us about “Grey Muzzle”. I’ll hop over and check it out.

What a cool idea! I hope they sell lots of bulbs. Every year I tell myself I’ll order some, and it always gets too late before I know it!

  5. This sounds like a great idea for people who want to order Easter flowers for someone!

  6. Kritine says:

What a great program. I am so glad so many people are thinking of things they can do to help senior dogs. So many of them have many years of love ahead of them, if only people are willing to take the chance.

I hope this campaign is a huge success!

  7. Gus used to be a huge “help” to us in the backyard too. Fortunately, we were able to break him of his digging habit when he was a puppy.

Daley was smart to swipe an apple when he got the chance. There’s nothing like a fresh apple!

  8. Katie says:

New followers here from the blog hop! Beautiful post! Loving your blog and we have a house full of “diggers” too :-) At least Daley’s digs were productive, though! haha
